The jury of the 25th European Newspaper Award
The 14 jury members came from eight countries: United Kingdom, Portugal, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Greece and Germany. They are journalists, scientists and designers.

European Newspaper of the Year, Circulation up to 35,000 copies: Naftemporiki, Greece

Jury statement:

Naftemporiki is primarily dedicated to financial and business topics and has a serious and elegant layout to accompany this. The choice of fonts used, the page layout and the use of photos and infographics are excellent. The design of the front page is extremely varied: sometimes there are large headlines and smaller illustrations, sometimes a large picture dominates and, in the case of special events, a photo is placed underneath and the headline on top. Large topics are presented on double pages and often divided into different parts in order to present the content quickly and clearly. Naftemporiki – an excellently designed business newspaper produced daily by a small team.

About the newspaper:

Naftemporiki is a tabloid financial-business newspaper published in Piraeus, Athens. It is considered the most important daily newspaper in Greece in the financial and shipping sector. The newspaper has a circulation of 5,000 copies. It employs 25 writers, 5 page editors, 1 photo editor and 6 layout artists.

European Newspaper of the Year, Category regional newspaper: Der Tagesspiegel, Germany

Jury statement:

The print layout remained untouched for many years: It was broadsheet format and had the look of a serious national newspaper. The focus was more on innovative ideas in the online sector. The “Checkpoint” newsletter is considered a model for many local newsletters in Germany. In recent years, the Tagesspiegel has also often been honoured at the Newspaper Award for animated infographics and scrollytellings. Last year, the Tagesspiegel team then turned its attention to the print edition. The result is a respectable newspaper with nationwide appeal in tabloid format. Even today, half of the circulation is already published as an ePaper and there is a good chance of target groups not only in Berlin but throughout Germany. The Tagesspiegel shows that it is possible to plan and manage major changes.

About the newspaper:

The Tagesspiegel is published in Berlin. The print edition was completely redesigned last year and has been published in tabloid format ever since. The newspaper has a paid circulation of 100,504 copies (IVW/3 2023). Of these, 52,280 copies are ePaper.

At Tagesspiegel, the entire editorial team of around 300 people takes care of both the printed newspaper and the digital offerings. Keywords are website, newsletter,
specialist briefings, podcasts and app. This includes a Head of Visual, 6 art directors (online & print), 8 picture editors and 6 layout artists.

Jury statement:

“Our good old newspaper” – that‘s a phrase that won‘t come to mind with “nrc”. The choice of typography, photographs and illustrations creates an overall impression that is young, dynamic and forward-thinking.

Back in the days, when NRC was published in full format, it was mainly known as a business newspaper called NRC Handelsblad. Nothing has remained of that. Thanks to the tabloid format, new content and new design, it is now possible to reach many other Dutch people as well as business people.

With its modern print look, it goes without saying that it also publishes on all channels on the web including social media and podcasts. As in the past, nrc also won a number of awards in the online categories at this year‘s European Newspaper Award.

nrc – a newspaper that completely abandons the image of the “good old newspaper” and has a young, contemporary look in print and online.

About the newspaper:

nrc is published in Amsterdam in tabloid format and has 298,000 subscribers in print and online. The newspaper employs 266 editors, 11 photo-editors and 26 layout artists. In addition to the employed photographers and layout artists, there are also freelancers, without whose creative work the production would not be possible.

Jury Statement:

The weekly newspaper “der Freitag” has a calm, uncluttered layout. The newspaper consists mainly of long articles that you can dive into. The content is not intended as junk food for quick consumption. Readers will take the time to select content and then get in-depth information. The choice of topics also often sets it apart from other media. The “Debate” section, for example, makes it possible to set a unique agenda. The cover story is the introduction to the newspaper. It always works very well because the look and feel of the front page is seamlessly transferred to the story inside. The varied use of illustrations is particularly striking. They are used to emphasise key topics, debates and special editions. der Freitag – a reader-friendly newspaper with distinctive content and unmistakable design.

About the newspaper:

der Freitag is published in Rheinische Format and is published in Berlin. The newspaper has a paid circulation of 25,176 copies (IVW 3/2023). In June 2023 the editorial design was renewed. der Freitag employs 18 permanent editorial team members as well as 7 colleagues in the art department – art direction, cover graphics, graphics and picture editing.
