European Newspaper of the Year,
Category Local Newspaper: Hallingdølen, Norway

Jury statement:
Hallingdølen is a classic local newspaper, typical for Scandinavia. The newspaper focuses entirely on local news. That is why individuals and groups from the region are always in the foreground.
A lot of space is given to readers‘ opinions. This shows that the newspaper is deeply rooted in the communication and opinion-forming of the region.
The layout is picture-oriented, with a large picture almost always at the centre of a double-page spread. Cover and cover stories often run over four to five pages to ensure the necessary depth of coverage.
In the quality of photo reports, which often run over eight to ten pages, Hallingdølen is often on a par with regional and national newspapers from all over Europe.
Overall: Hallingdølen‘s concept and design are a very good model for local newspapers all over Europe.

About the newspaper:
Hallingdølen is published in tabloid format and has a circulation of circulation of 10,084 copies. It is published three times a week. The newspaper employs twelve journalists, one photographer and two layouters.

European Newspaper of the Year,

Ara – Now – was founded in 2010. This newspaper focuses strongly on creativity and innovation in print and online.
The overall impression is very serious. Larger pictures are only on the front pages of sections and in supplements. The articles are relatively long. Chronicle Dispay is used for headlines, a font that contributes to a serious appearance.

Jury statement:
Business newspapers are normally very serious and calmly designed. Not so De Tijd from Belgium! Already the front page visually shows which topics of the day are to be expected inside. Inside, a very loosened-up magazine layout is done, where even seemingly dry economic topics are presented in a reader-friendly way with illustrations, charts and infographics. Even large background pieces are presented in a visually outstanding way.
The typography, the choice of colours, the layout: the result is a distinctive appearance in which content and form fit together perfectly.

About the newspaper:
De Tijd is published in Berlin format and has a circulation of 55,000 copies. The website has about 200,000 unique visitors per day. The newspaper employs 95 journalists, 5 layouters, 3 infographic artists and 3 photo editors‘.

European Newspaper of the Year,

Expresso has a front page that shows the variety of topics inside the newspaper. A large photo always forms the focus of the page.
Inside, articles often run over a double-page spread and are accompanied by illustrations. Complex infographics are often used in the business section or for science topics to present content in a reader-friendly way.
In the online section, Expresso stands out because it often uses multimedia stories.
The magazine supplement „E“ is dedicated to cultural topics. Cover stories can take up as many as ten pages. Photo reports are often presented. Long articles are often marked as belonging together by illustrations.
