Jury 24th European Newspaper Award
The 15 jury members came from eight countries: Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Germany. They are journalists, scientists and designers. 11 jury members met for the two-day judging in Düsseldorf. Another four made assessments from the home office.

European Newspaper of the Year,
Category Local Newspaper: Las Provincias, ES

Jury statement:
Las Provincias has a richly varied layout. Template pages that are worked into are rather rare. The layout department creates each issue in a new way, completely tailored to the content of the news.
The newspaper is characterised by visual journalism on many pages. This includes a very good use of photos, the use of double-page infographics and alternative story forms that combine photography, infographics and text to present information to the readers in the best possible way.
Las Provinzias, a well varied local newspaper in Europe.

About the newspaper:
Las Provincias is published in Valencia in tabloid format. It has a circulation of about 8,000 copies. The newspaper has 51 editors, 5 photographers and 5 layouters. The newspaper is also very successful on the internet.

European Newspaper of the Year,
Category Regional Newspaper: Bergens Tidende, N

Jury statement:
In Bergens Tidende it is immediately noticeable that there is a clear order: big stories are at the beginning of a section. They run across the double page and always have a single large picture. Normal department pages have much smaller pictures. In this way, the readers are automatically guided through the newspaper: They recognise the important topics by the hierarchy in the layout. Highlights are set by double pages, where a topic is presented with perfect visualisation and very well balanced white space.
BT Magasinet is published on Saturdays. This supplement on thicker newsprint is used by the editors to present long photo reports. The page layout is picture-oriented and has a lot of white space.
Conclusion: This newspaper always looks generous. Working with white space is deeply embedded in this editorial team.

About the newspaper:
Bergens Tidende is one of Norway‘s largest daily newspapers. It is published in tabloid format seven days a week. It has a circulation of about 35,000 copies and employs 60 editors, 8 photographers and 9 layouters.

European Newspaper of the Year,
Category Nationwide Newspaper: De Morgen, B

Jury statement:
De Morgen is made for a young target group in terms of content and design. This includes, for example, a richly varied front page, a magazine-like layout and the double-page picture of the day.
Through various daily supplements, the paper sets its own content priorities, which are away from the general stream of news. The supplements are called “Zeno” and “Het Vrije Leven” – The Free Life. At weekends there is also the supplement “dm.magazine”.
De Morgen is a very good example of how much you can present a newspaper every day with a distinctive layout and unconventional content. Without doubt a role model for newspapers in Europe.

About the newspaper:
De Morgen is published in the Tabloid format and has a circulation of approximately 55,000 copies. The newspaper employs 50 editors, five photographers and ten layouters.

European Newspaper of the Year,
Category Weekly Newspaper: NZZ am Sonntag, CH

Jury statement:
The first pages of the NZZ am Sonntag cover the latest news topics. A large image is always used on the front pages of the sections. This gives the newspaper a very good structure. Inside, there are pages in the magazine layout, where a lot of white space is used. The use of illustrations and infographics has intensified recently, for example with the „2050“ series on sustainability.
A special highlight is the NZZ am Sonntag magazine, where cover stories run over four to five double pages. Here, very individual topics are set, topics that are not covered in the everyday news flow.
The typography and layout of the NZZ am Sonntag appears very functional and reduced. “Less is more” is clearly recognisable as the motto of this design.

About the newspaper:
The NZZ am Sonntag is published in Swiss format and has a circulation of approximately 102,000 copies. The newspaper employs 57 journalists and six layouters. It also has one art director for the newspaper and one for the magazine, as well as an infographic artist.

Judges‘ Special Recognition:
Het Financieele Dagblad, Voor.kennis, NL

Jury statement:
The trend towards laid-back weekend editions exists in many European countries. With the weekend supplement „Voor.kennis“ this trend is taken even further. The supplement is stapled and trimmed. You can go right to the edge of the paper in terms of design. This results in a perfect magazine layout. The title „Voor.kennis“ is a play on words from „prior“ and „knowlegde“, which means „inside information“. Particularly striking are the cover and cover stories, which are always aptly supported visually. Other highlights are double pages where the stories are derived from infographics.
Overall: Voor.kennis the newspaper of the future is already published today.

About the newspaper:
Voor.kennis is the weekend supplement of the business newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad (FD). The newspaper has a total of 115,000 subscribers and 1.6 million monthly users on fd.nl and 175,000 app users. In addition FD has 1.5 million weekly page views.
FD employs 100 journalists. The design team consists of 20 graphic designers, infographic designers, digital designers and photo editors.
